Hall effect as experimental proof of positive charge carriers in semoconductors

Two types of charge carriers contribute to electric conductivity in semiconductors: electrons and holes. While electrons have been easily accepted as charge carriers on all levels of physics education, according to our experience, even undergraduate students have difficulties in accepting the concept of holes. It is difficult to imagine a simple «absence» of an electon as a positively charged entity equivalently contributing to electric current just as a negatively charged electron. The Hall effect experiment has been used to demonstrate the existence of positive charge carriers in semiconductors. We show how to implement this experiment as a laboratory and demonstration experiment in physics teaching.
