Leuciscus souffia ssp: a new subspecies in the Cetina River
As Leuciscus souffia muticelus was located and described in the Cetina River (Leiner and Popovic, 1984). This subspecies is known to be distributed in the rivers of Central and Southern Italy and in some rivers of Croatia and Slovenia (Vukovic, 1982). Based on the material we have seen from Italy, we have concluded that the fish which lives in the Cetina River is not the same subspecies, and we believe that this is a separate subspecies. New subspecies lives exclusively in the Cetina River, and bears little resemblance to the same species from the Danube River Basin and subspecies from central Italy. It is unlikely that this subspecies has any connection to the other subspecies living in central and southern Italy. This subspecies is possibly endemic to the Cetina River and is commonly found in combination with other endemic species of Leuciscus such as L. svallize, L. ukliva, L. turkskyi, L. illyricus. In his paper, Crivelli (1996) mentions that the taxonomic status of Leuciscus needs to be redefined, and that the value of this taxon also needs to be reinvestigated. Our investigation has shown this subspecies to have different biological, different morphological, meristic and ecological characteristics, which are described in this paper.
