The Snow Queen meets a Snow King : a cultural dialogue between two literary fairy tales

This paper deals with two fairy tales ; /The Snow Queen/, one of the most popular stories by Hans Christian Andersen, and a Croatian picture book/ Snježni kralj (The Snow King) /by Damir Miloš, illustrated by Krešimir Skozret and Radovan Devlić. These two literary fairy tales are analyzed and compared with respect to their title characters, story structure, narration and motifs. While the Croatian picture book evokes and simultaneously counterpoints some aspects of /The Snow Queen/, it also refers to several other cultural contexts and stories that belong to the common European cultural heritage. Intertextual aspects are found at both verbal and pictorial strata of the picture book. Besides, it establishes a creative dialogue with the tradition of fairy tales in general, and with Andersen’s fairy tale in particular.
