Genotoxic, physiological and immunological effects caused by temperature increase, hypoxia or food deprivation in freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus
Various environmental factors other than chemical pollution are able to influence biological responses measured in pollution effect biomonitoring. Genotoxicity of stress caused by temperature increase, hypoxia and food deprivation was assessed using Comet assay and micronucleus test on haemocytes of freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus in order to determine their significance in genotoxicity biomonitoring of aquatic environments. A battery of physiological and immunological haemolymph parameters (THC, lactate, glucose and protein concentration) was used to evaluate the crayfish stress response to deviations from optimal environmental conditions. Our results indicated that the stress induced by increased temperature or hypoxia may increase DNA damage in freshwater crayfish while food deprivation could be considered as a non genotoxic stress.
