HEAT TRANSFER ANALYSIS OF THE ROCK BED THERMAL STORAGE UNIT IN A SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM

During the winter months, solar greenhouse irradiation gains at certain periods of the day often exceed its heat losses. Significant conventional fuel savings can be achieved by storage of this surplus of irradiated solar energy. Heat transfer analysis of the rock bed thermal storage unit has been carried out numerically using Hausen’s L-P method. The analysis is carried out for the modular solar greenhouse. The numerical analysis of the rock bed storage unit is based on the greenhouse’s daily and hourly heat gains and losses during the winter months. For the analysis the Test Referent Year data for the North Adriatic climatic area have been used. Furthermore, the storage unit thermal efficiency calculation has been given. Namely, thermal efficiency is the limiting parameter for the storage unit application and the basic parameter for the thermal energy storage unit optimisation.
