Photoelastic investigation into stresses in high transverse contact ratio gears
A photoelastic investigation into the tooth root and Hertzian stresses in involute external spur high transverse contact ratio (HCR) gears was carried out on a photoelastic model with two gear segments in mesh. A double or triple contact of tooth pairs was obtained by shifting and rotating the segments. The intention was to simulate the real total load distribution on tooth pairs. A comparison of experimental results and theoretical calculations with values obtained by using the HCR gear calculation according to DIN 3990 and ISO 6336 shows that the DIN / ISO procedure gives rather inaccurate results, although with higher safety factors.
