Merchant fleet structure as element of transport competitiveness on inland waterways
Unlike West – European countries, the traffic on inland waterways in the countries of Central Europe and the Republic of Croatia still represents a relatively poorly represented transport mod. One of the possible reasons may lie in unfavourable technical and technological structure of the merchant ships fleet which has difficulties now in meeting the requirements imposed by the advanced market of transport services. Therefore, the current structure needs to be considered including the orientation of the possible development of traffic on inland waterways as indicators of increase in the competitiveness of cargo transport on inland waterways compared to other transport modes. The analysis of the merchant fleet structure and of the application of advanced transport technologies on inland waterways and of the requirements and criteria to realize the transport services makes its clear which elements are significant for the improvement of the level of service in traffic on inland waterways and its higher share in the total transport of goods.
