Dynamic experimental analysis of the cracks in light-core sandwich material
The investigation of the dynamic failure processes in fiber-reinforced plastic laminates and sandwich panels is significant in estimating of reliability of the components of mechanical structures converged to the impacts. In the simple reflective optical arrangement, the deformations perpendicular to the body surface cause on the screen the appearance of the dark shadow (caustics) at the position of crack-tip. Similarly the CGS interferometry method produces high contrast fringes, caused by out-of-plane surface displacements, and provides a substantial degree of control on the sensitivity of measurement. The evolution of the interfacial cracks between the core and the skins in one type of material, presented in this paper is registered by using the high-speed photography as a helpful tool of proper understanding of the physical process of shear crack initialization and extensive damage afterwards.
