Recent Epidemiological Studies In The Pathogenesis Of Atopic Dermatitis

This study reports some epidemiological charncteristics of atopic dennatitis (AD). As the part of a long-term survey performed at the Allergy Unit Department of Dermatology Medical School, in Zagreb during 1990-1994, we investigated the incidence, clinical course aud etiology of AD. 924 patients with AD were registered. The incidence of AD is increased duriug the war in Croatia. Infemales, particulary in the age group of 10-19, AD was twice as more as frequent ihan in the males. The family history of atopy was found in 50% of the cases. lntradermal skin tests were positive in 76% of patienls ; prick tests in 55% and 50% of positive reaction were in scratch tests on conseroant allergens. Contact allergy in AD patienis was found in 69%. The commonesit contact allergens were nickel (23%), cobalt (16%), potassium dichromate (13%)aud fragrances (12%).
