Lumbar dumbbell ganglioneuroblastoma: a light and electron microscopic study of neuronal degeneration
An 18-month old girl was found to have a dumb-bell shaped tumour, partly localized retroperitoneally, and partly within the spinal canal. Clinical presentation was dominated by increased blood pressure, tachycardia, thirst, excessive sweating, and a subcutaneous mass in the right lumbar area. A complete removal of tumour was undertaken , after which the symptoms dissappeared. The tumour was histollogically diagnosed as a ganglioneuroblastoma. Electron microscopy revealed ultrastuctural details ; neurosecretary granules, neuritic processes and synaptic structures. The cytoplasma of neoplastic ganglion cells contained structures corresponding to ''membraneous cytoplasmic bodies'', ''zebra bodies'', osmiophilic bodies, giant neurosecretory granules, and structures similar to Pick's bodies.
