Early Medieval pottery on the eastern Adriatic in context of interaction between the Slavs and autochthonous population

Early Medieval period on the eastern Adriatic, although thoroughly researched, still represents one of the most controversial time periods. It is the period of Slavic settlement which occurred in the first half of the 7th century. Also, it is the time when the process of ethnogenesis of the Croat nation, as we know it today, started. It was happening through the complicated process of interaction between the newcomers and autochthonous Late Antique population. Written sources from the period are very scant, so archaeological artefacts, especially pottery, are of the utmost importance. Archaeological excavations have produced numerous Early Medieval pottery finds, mostly from necropolises. Surprisingly, there is no overall synthesis of this material, apart from analyses of pottery from individual sites. Besides that, taxonomic researches are almost non existent. This poster aims at providing just a glimpse on the state of research and some of the most important questions regarding the early medieval pottery on the eastern Adriatic. Special attention is paid to the possibility of identifying the pottery of different ethnic groups. Problem of the development of Slavic pottery on the Adriatic is addressed since the pottery production of the newcomers has been heavily influenced by the pottery of autochthonous population and thus inevitably different from Slavic pottery in the rest of Europe. Religious and ideological aspects of ethnic interactions are also relevant especially in connection with burial rituals because the newcomers were incinerating their deceased for some time after the settlement.
