CONTRACEPTION USE AMONG FIRST YEAR MEDICIAL STUDENTS UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB

Background and aims Medical School first year students attending social medicine course in 2007 and 2008 completed questionnaire about health and social problems of youths. The aim of the study is to identify contraception use among sexually active medical students, differed by gender and length of living in Zagreb. Methods Anonymous questionnaire was completed by 489 students. Answers were analysed by descriptive statistic methods. Results Out of 340 female and 149 male students 43% female and 58% male students are sexually active. Less than one year live in Zagreb 59% female and 65% male students. More than six years or from ever live in Zagreb 41% female and 33% male students. Out of students living in Zagreb less than one year, 68 % female and 47 % male students reported contraception use in first sexual intercourse by themselves or their partner. Use of condom reported 22% female and 31 % male students. Regular contraception use (always) reported 63% female and 58% male students. Out of students living in Zagreb more than six years or from ever, 56 % female and 67 % male students reported contraception use in first sexual intercourse. Condom use reported 26% female and 22% male students. Contraception is used regularly (always) by 68 % female and 74% male students. Conclusions Results strongly suggest that education and counselling in reproductive and sexual health must be offered to all students. In education emphasis should be on empowerment of attitudes regarding family planning and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
