Finding out the identity of red deer antlers - design of genetic study
DNA analysis is a good method of choice in some special cases when no other method could give an exact answer to question of identity. Moreover, combination of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA typing is recommended to obtain very useful information and make undoubted conclusion. Therefore, three casted antlers of red deer were collected at the hunting ground ‘Moslavina’ and sent to the forensic DNA laboratory (School of Medicine) with the request to find out if those antlers originated from the same deer or not. For typing microsatellite polymorphisms three DNA markers were selected: RT6, NVHRT48 and NVHRT73. Since antlers were few years old hypervariable region 1 (HV1) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was also sequenced. Two of the antler DNA samples showed the same genotype while third was different. Microsatellite markers typing results were confirmed with HV1 mitochondrial DNA sequence results. Obtained results indicate that two antler samples originate from the same deer.
