Scenarios on Forest Management in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine
The economic transition in most Central and Eastern European countries has been a powerful driver of many changes in ownership structure, economic conditions and forest policies. Common characteristics could be described by decreased demand for wood products, changes in ownership of the forest in favour of private ownership, decreased employment and growing uncertainty. This book presents a research report of the SCEFORMA (Scenario Analysis of Sustainable wood Products Under Different Forest Management Regimes) project which analyses these changes and the possible development directions of forests in central and eastern Europe. The project aimed to contribute to the discussion about sustainability of the biological and wood production potential, possible management options and some impacts of environmental changes. Quantitative assessment of future wood production under six different scenarios was made for Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. Scenarios differ in forest growth and timber harvest, and the overall consequences of forest decline and climate change on future wood supply.
Forest management; economic transition; large scale scenario modeling.
