Nanotechnology in Textile – Sewability of Cotton Knitted Fabric Treated with Natural Zeolite Nanoparticles

Since the conventional methods in textile technology and industry can not answer any more on modern market demands, especially in the case of treatment durability, the application of nanotechnology in this area is of particular interest. Nanotechnology enables high durability since nanoparticles have large surface area and high surface energy, and therefore high affinity, which enlarges durability of certain fabric treatment. Tribomechanical activation of volcanic mineral, natural zeolite clinoptilolite, yield particles on a submicron level (micro and nanoparticles), what leads to an increased specific surface and increased accessibility of the micro-channels the activity of the zeolite is increased several hundred times. Activated zeolite nanoparticles have anticancerogenic and antimetastatic properties, are the most powerful natural imunostimulator and antioxidant. Applied in textile finishing, they increase the efficiency of antimicrobial action, and give off high level of UV protection. On the other hand, these treatments can lead to sewing damage of cotton knitted fabrics. By stitching through two, three and four layers of the knitted fabrics finished with nanoparticles of natural zeolite and by optimizing the sewing parameters sewing needle penetration forces and sewing thread tension closely related to resulting damages of the knitted fabric were tested (ITV-Denkendorf).
