Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE)represent a major part of plastic waste. Therefore, the research was focused on the characterization of a mixture of PP and PE-LD. Since most of the polymers are immiscible and incompatible, improvement of the compatibility of PP/PE-LD blends has been achieved in the addition of ethylene/propylene/diene rubber (EPDM) as compatibilizer. Tensile strength at break, elongation at break and Izod impact strength have been chosen to evaluate the effectiveness of EPDM in these blends. Glass transition temperature and the stiffness of PP/PE-LD blends with and without EPDM were determinate by dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA). Blend morphology was explored using scanning electronic microscope. Addition of EPDM reduced the tensile strength at break and improved elongation at break. Blends of PP/PE-LD/EPDM showed higher values of Izod impact strength. Storage modulus of PP was reduced by EPDM addition. SEM micrographs of PP/PE-LD/EPDM blends showed better compatibility.
