Sažetak
One of the world‘s most widely used herbicides is organophosphorus, non-selective, broad spectrum herbicide glyphosate (N-phosphomethyl glycine). Nowadays, even more genetically modified crops resistant to pesticides are sowed. Most of them are glyphosate resistant which enables them to tolerate higher concentrations of the active ingredient needed for effective weed control. Hence, higher amounts of glyphosate are introduced into the environment. Due to the yearly increase of its consumption, it should be evaluated with new tests. Since organophosphorous pesticides may induce oxidative stress leading to generation of free radicals and alteration in antioxidant system which can in long term cause manifest health problems, blood samples were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and lipid peroxidation. In our study we decided to test four concentrations that are likely to be encountered in residential and occupational exposure to glyphosate (0.5, 2.91, 3.5 and 580 µg/ml) with and without exogenous metabolic activation system (S9). Glyphosate at 580 µg/ml both with and without S9 increased plasma antioxidant capacity significantly. Control levels were 1.066±0.02 mM without S9 and 1.137±0.01 mM with S9. The addition of S9 significantly altered the antioxidant power for all tested concentrations. A significant increase in lipid peroxidation was observed at doses 2.91 and 580 µg/ml without S9 and at doses 3.50 and 580 µg/ml with S9 in respect to corresponding controls. Our results, based on simultaneous measurements of total antoxidant power and lipid peroxidation, suggest that glyphosate exposure provoked oxidative stress but with no clear dose dependence.
