Evolution of Stress Components at Involute Gears Teeth Flanks During the Mesh

Flanks of involute spur gears teeth are subjected to combined rolling and sliding during the mesh. Consequential normal and tangential loading of teeth flanks is cyclic in nature and it constantly changes its magnitude during the mesh which causes very complex stress state in the material of the tooth flank. Due to the large number of input variables and influences such as geometry of teeth in contact, type of lubrication, value of coefficient of friction and residual stresses, determination of values of stresses at teeth flanks is quite a complicated task. Usually, finite element analysis is used for this purpose. Downside of this approach is substantial amount of time required for modelling of gears geometry and pre-processing/post-processing procedure in general. If significant number of scenarios needs to be analyzed, this approach becomes even more prohibitive. For determination of values of stress components at teeth flanks and their evolution during the mesh, convenient semi-analytical calculation model of teeth in contact was devel-oped and implemented in computer program. Beside standard geometrical parameters of gears, it enables taking into account most important meshing conditions. Evolution of stresses obtained for sample gear pair are presented.
