Neandertal lateral midface. A morphometric analysis
In this analysis a new methods and techniques of geometric morphometrics were used to testchanges in the facial region of chosen mid ald late Pleistocene hominins. Particular attention was given to neandertals. 3D geometric morphometrics proved to be a powerful tool for this type of study, as it allows better visualization of changes, which can, in turn, be tested and interesting patterns pursued through additional tests. “ Peculiar” morphology of Neandertal faces seems to be a result of complex changes, including a more sagittal orientation of th lateral face cobined with anterior movement of the face, all resulting in an unique combination of traits. While most of the traits of Neandertal faces are not apomorphic, their combination seems to be. However, once notes, these changes need to be further pursued with a larger sample.
