Comments on "Poisoning of seventeen Euroasian griffons (Gyps fulvus) in Croatia"
My paper "Poisoning of seventeen Euroasian grifons (Gyps fulvus) in Croatia" (2007, J. Raptor Res. 41:239-242) was one result of the research projct "Birds and human well-being: ornithological models of protection". The project was focused on the direct and indirect impact of humans on bird species in Croatia, with an emphasis on rare and endangered birds, especially Croatian breeding birds. The project was part of the national program "Bird helth, humans and environment", which is composed of seven projects ; thus my project was a part of a larger study of the helth of bird populations in Croatia. Hence, I felt it was my duty, as a Croatian ornithologist, to inform the wider scientific community of the serious problem of poisoning of Griffon Vulture in Croatia. I proposed National Commettee for the Problems of Illegal Use of Poison in Nature, established in 2001 to be more active in the sense to have permanent status and linked with the specific task of organizing an international convention to address solutions to the illegal use of poison in nature with its center in Croatia. Wild boars were, among the jackals, the main target of placing the poison in the nature.
