Identification of war victims remains in Croatia by DNA typing
The identification of war victims remains is a very important to the Croatian Goverment, as well as to the families and friends whose beloveds were killed. Of the cca 16 000 persons killed during the war, 1637 were not returned to their families for burial and are declared still missing. The Croatian Government does tremendous efforts to determine the fate of every missing person. As a consequence of these efforts hundreds of remains have been recovered and obtained from the exchange of war victims remains with the enemy. Many of these remains have been successfully identified by standard forensic methods. However a number of cases cannot be identified in any other way than by DNA typing. In our labaratory we have processed 196 casework samples, as well as almost thousand reference samples. For 106 samplescpositive identification was found.
