Special issue on scalable coded media beyond compression
Scalable coding has become an integral part of international standards — JPEG2000 for image coding and the scalable extension of the H.264/MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) for video coding. It has been widely expected that a number of applications would benefit from scalable coding technology. Such applications include visual data transmission over point-to-point networks, mobile video for multi-party conversational services, broadcasting services, content production, storage and management, multi-channel distribution, layered protection of content and multi-point surveillance systems. In order to integrate functionalities of scalable coding into these application new solutions are being pursued. Though related developments are reaching maturity, it is vital to investigate the effects of scalable coded content to other multimedia applications, such as, the existing compression domain visual content analysis, robust and secured streaming, video surveillance, search and retrieval from distributed databases and digital rights management. The successful exploitation of scalable coding technologies in multimedia applications depends on the development of new schemes addressing the usage and integration issues associated with those applications.
