The Anchors as Bearing Elements of Supporting System

A spherical cavity appears after blasting of certain quantity of explosive at the bottom of a borehole in clay or soft rock. An anchor or bolt is inserted in the cavity, and the cavity and borehole filled up with concrete, mortar or grout mix. The anchors could be a part of the supporting system in case of the excavation in soft rock or soil. Field tests were performed for several representative anchoring depth / anchor diameter ratios. An anchor – soil interaction mechanism for the anchors placed into the soil under the impact of vertical pulling force is described in this paper. In two profiles, one perpendicular to the other, the pulling forces were gradually increased and the ground surface displacements measured. The Finite Elements Method (FEM) was used to perform the pulling force computation for the case tested. The case was treated as an axial-symmetrical problem. A statistical analysis was carried out of interdependence between displacements and pulling forces determined by field tests and numerical computations. The exponential function was adopted as an approximation curve due to expressive convergence of pulling forces towards limit value.
