Myxobolus cyprini and Myxobolus sp. in imported Goldfish (Carassius auratus l.)
A large number of Myxobolus species have been reported in goldfish worldwide. In Croatia, the majority of goldfish are imported from the Far East, especially Singapore. The present study reports the occurrence, spore morphology and pathology of two Myxobolus species in imported goldfish. The results of the study on the presence of Myxobolus species in imported goldfish showed that 31.6% of the examined goldfish were infected with Myxobolus cyprini and 1.7% were infected with Myxobolus sp. For the purposes of this study and based on morphological characteristics of spores and specific localization of the plasmodia, we tentatively identified the first species as Myxobolus cyprini Doflein, 1898. However, molecular techniques are needed for the identification of these two Myxobolus species. Importation of live fish can cause the introduction of exotic agents, including parasites and spreading diseases. Due to this, numerous non-native species such as Dermocystidium koi, Centrocestus formosanus and Atractolytocestus huronensis have been recorded in Croatia during recent years. Therefore, it is essential to subject the import of ornamental fish to quarantine and regular health monitoring.
