Diagnostics of skeletal deformities in farmed European eel (Anguilla anguilla l. 1758) in Croatia
In order to classify and quantify spinal column deformities, European eels were sampled from a commercial fish farm in Croatia. For the purpose of this study, only specimens showing representative deformities were examined. Spinal column deformities were identified using x-ray and classified into 6 types: lordosis, scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylosys, vertebral fusion and malformation of vertebral spines. According to Afonso et al. (2000), the most frequent vertebral deformities are called the LSK syndrome. Notable deformities were primarily found on the haemal region. With the exception of a single specimen, deformities were strongly expressed and more frequently recorded in specimens with stagnated growth. The x-ray projection is very significant for the results. X-ray is a diagnostic imaging method giving a two-dimensional image. In order to examine the three-dimensionality of pathological changes, it is necessary to record two basic projections (latero-lateral ; dorso-ventral). Very often, only the latero-lateral projection is used, resulting in unreal (false) RTG visible pathological deformities. An example of this is the finding of scoliosis in the vertebral column, which in the profile view appear to be signs of coalescence or fusion of vertebrae, while in the dorso-lateral view it is clearly visible as a sideward deviation of the column in scoliosis form. For confirmation of x-ray diagnosis, suspected specimens were boiled and flesh was removed from the bones to enable a detailed study of the deformity.
