Dynamical effects and conductance asymmetry in metal-insulator-metal systems with different electrodes
We investigated plannar system consisting of two semi-infinite metal electrodes separated by narrow vacuum gap. This system can be viewed as a model of STM and other metal-insulator-metal structures. We found that the conductance minimum in systems which consist of metal electrodes that have different plasma frequencies, i.e. different dielectric properties, is shifted to a non-zero value and that apparent barrier height varies slowly with gap width, in accordance with experimental results. As this simple model gives accurate predictions about apparent barrier height in STM that were not previously accounted for, we think that its main characteristics should be incorporated in more sophisticated models of STM.
