Cellular markers of activity dependance on radiofrequency radiation exposure

The purpose of investigation was to evaluate activity of external electromagnetic field, with regard to those derived from mobile telephony, on proliferation ability and cytoplasm protein structures in nerve cells in in vitro conditions. The continuous culture of human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y was used in the study. Negative along with positive control cell samples was included into the investigation. Cell samples were submitted to the irradiation of GSM (Global System Mobile) modulated frequency 915 MHz, strength 30 V/m and averaged SAR 1.6 W/kg. Radiation lasted for 1, 2 and 3 hours. Selected frequency field was generated within gigahertz transversal electromagnetic chamber (GTEM) equipped with source of signal Anritzu MS2711B, amplifier Micro devices RF 3146 and signal modulator Micro devices RF 2722. After 1, 2 and 3 hours of radiation the action of GSM modulated field on SH-SY5Y cells division was investigated during the growth period of 10 days. The results showed that 2- and 3-hours of irradiation caused significant proliferation decrease on 3rd, 4th and 5th days of cell growth (Figure 1.) (p<0.05). A significant impairment of cytoskeleton macromolecular network was noted after irradiation treatment of 3 hours (p<0.05). Inhibition in cell proliferative ability and damage of microtubule fibers was significantly related to duration of irradiation.

GTEM-cell; 915 MHz; culture SH-SY5Y; proliferation; microtubules
