Indirect measure of attitude function and values-attitude relati

The moderating effect of self-monitoring as an indirect measure of attitude function on the relation between rating of value's importance and attitude was examined by means of analyses of variance and separate regression analyses. The subjects (478 female students) rated the importance of the 21 relevant values on a seven-point scale, attitude object (legalized abortion) on fourteen semantic differential seven-point scale and filled out Croatian version of the Self-monitoring Scale (Snyder 1974). Subject ’s ratings of the importance of values (three principal components scores) were analyzed by means of two-way ANOVA’s with attitude (positive/negative) and attitude function as two factors. The subjects were classified as value-expressive or social adjustive based on a median split of distribution of the self-monitoring score. The only significant effect in ANOVA was attitude position main effect: subjects with a negative attitude to legalized abortion give more importance to Family Values and General Social Values and less importance to Personal Hedonistic Values than subjects with a positive attitude. In addition, regression analyses revealed that values significantly predicted attitudes of subjects with value-expressive attitudes (low self-monitors), but not of subjects with social adjustive function (high self-monitors). These findings only partially supported the consideration of self-monitoring as an indirect measure of attitude function. In order to reach a more definite conclusion about the validity of Self-monitoring Scale as a measure of attitude function, comparison of self-monitoring measure with direct measure of attitude function will be needed.
