Prevalence of Antibodies to Human Herpesvirus 8 in Children from Sardinia and Croatia
The discovery of herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in Kaposi sarcoma (KS) tissue made human herpesvirus 8(HHV-8)the likeliest causal agent of KS.In this study, we assesed the prevalence of HHV-8 infection in healthy children in Sardinia, with high incidence of classic KS and in children affected by several types of cancer in Croatia, where the incidence of KS is low.Although it remains difficult to assess HHV-8 prevalence in indivudauls without KS on account of limitations of the available testing methods, the findings of the present study confirm that infection with HHV-8 in children is rare, and that it does not closely reflect the spread of classis KS in the general population.
