Liquid-liquid equilibrium of the FCC gasoline – sulfur – sulfolane system
Regarding more severe EU restrictions relating to sulfur content in motor fuels, increased number of new methods for deep desulfurization of gasoline and diesel fuels is emerging, some of which are, till now, and successfully commercialized. One of these new promising methods is desulfurization by liquid extraction with suitable solvent, i.e. oxidation and extraction combination (ODS). Liquid extraction method is based on better solubility of sulfur compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons in relation to non aromatics in appropriate polar solvent. FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) gasoline is one of the most important compounds of the commercial gasoline, with overall contribution of sulfur up to 98 %. This is why FCC gasoline desulfurization is highly necessary. The first step in such research is to determine liquid – liquid phase equilibrium for the investigated system, with a view to qualify efficiency of the sulfur compounds removal. In this research, liquid phase equilibrium diagram for the FCC gasoline-sulfur-sulfolane system is determined. Obtained equilibrium data are described with suitable mathematical model. In addition, distribution coefficients and separation factors are determined for the investigated system. From the obtained data it can be concluded that sulfolane is a promising solvent for the liquid extractive desulfurization of gasoline.
