A study on erosion of ductile cast iron
This study ha investigated the wear behavior of three different kinds of erosion particles on ductile cast iron (NCI). Particle erosion is a wear loss from the surface of solid body caused by the relative motion of fluid with solid particles. When the impact angle is low (between 0° and 30°), this kind of erosion is called the abrasive erosion. On the other side, if the impact angle is between 60° and 90°, the erosion is regarded as impact erosion. One of the advantages of ductile cast iron in relation to other cast irons is its good wear resistance. Particle erosion resistance is a function of impact angle and the kind of erosion particles. In the experiments samples of ductile cast iron were eroded with steel erodent particles of two different sizes at six different angles of impact (15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°). The test results were presented as the loss of mass, which occurred during the test. Testing with quartz sand and steel erodent particles shows that ductile cast iron has several times better abrasive erosion resistance than impact erosion resistance. The maximum measured wear was at 75° in the testing with quartz sand and at 60° in the testing with steel erodent particles.
