"Margaret Fuller: The Ambivalent Amazon"
The article considers some strategies of self-representation shared among the prominent women writers of the antebellum period in American literature. Margaret Fuller and Emily Dickinson wrote in different genres but figured themselves in terms of shared symbols suggesting a wider cultural horizon of American romanticism. It is also argued that they, as women artists, partake in the figuration of a long-lasting symbol, that of the Dark Lady subverting it in interesting ways that are culturally and psychologically conditioned.
