Evaluation of basic material properties using three-dimensional scanning data
The evaluation of basic material properties, such as the engineering stress diagram or the Poisson's ratio, is dependable upon specimen's geometry. The engineering stress and strain are generally evaluated from the experimental data (force, displacement), together with the initial specimen's cross-section area. The 3D scanning approach presented in this study is used to evaluate the initial cross-section for specimens where it is hard to measure the cross-section area with classical measuring devices. Another issue addressed herein is the evaluation of the Poisson's ratio from the volumetric changes of compression specimens for soft materials. For soft deformable materials the specimen's geometry is difficult to obtain. In presented approach the 3D scanning is used to capture the specimen’ s surface geometry without having a physical contact with the specimen. As engineering stress-strain diagram and Poisson's ratio define the basic material properties, the presented approach is proposing a new approach in experimental mechanics.
