Differences in Serum Cytokine Levels in Children and Adults with Immune Thrombocytopenia

Aims Cytokine are involved in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) process. This study evaluate differences in cytokine levels between pediatric (n=29) and adult (n=19) ITP patients, and compare these profiles to those found in healthy, age-matched controls. Changes in cytokine levels over time were also investigated. Methods Platelet count and serum cytokine levels were determined at diagnosis, at 8 weeks and 6 months in pediatric patients and at diagnosis and 8 weeks in adult patients. Results At diagnosis, children showed lower serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, while adult patients demonstrated lower levels of IL-10 than healthy, age-matched controls. IL-4 in children and adults, and IL-1alpha in adults, were higher than those in control subjects. Children with ITP had lower IL-4, IL-6 and interferon (IFN)-gama, and higher IFN-alpha then adults. At 6 months post-diagnosis, significantly higher IL-4 (P = 0.013) and IL-6 (P = 0.016) were found in children relative to diagnosis, along with lower IL-10 (P = 0.075) and TNF-alpha (P = 0.034). In adult patients, no significant differences were observed in cytokine levels between diagnosis and the 8- week evaluation. Conclusion. Further evaluations are necessary to determine the impact of cytokines on outcome of ITP in adults and children.
