Natural organic matter in groundwater of eastern Croatia : problem and solutions
Natural organic matter (NOM) in water is a complex mixture of organic materials and when present in water NOM changes aesthetic characteristics of water like taste, smell and color. During water chlorination process harmful disinfection by-products (DBP) could be formed in a reaction between organic matter and chlorine. Therefore, the removal of DBP precursors gains high importance. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in the area of eastern Croatia. It has been found that it contains high concentration of iron, manganese, ammonia, arsenic as well as natural organic matter. These contaminants mainly originated from natural sources as a result of geological composition of the soil. NOM concentrations vary through this region and in a number of wells high concentrations are observed. The investigation involved the study of performance of two processes for removal of NOM from groundwater: Fenton’ s process and activated carbon adsorption process. In Fenton’ s process the optimum pH, ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide dose were discussed. In adsorption process efficiencies of powdered and granular activated carbon were compared in dependence on pH and activated carbon dose. UV absorbance (A254) was used to reveal the two processes NOM removal efficiencies.
