After Said: Female Subjectivity and Colonial Space in Contemporary Film Adaptations of 19th century Novels
The paper looks at different ways female directors that come from postcolonial countries -Mira Nair, Patricia Rozema and Jane Campion - construct and present female agency and colonial space in their adaptations of 19th century classics. The way they portray female agency is shown to be intertwined with the stress they put on the colonial space in the adapted novels (namely, Thackeray's Vanity Fair, Austen's Mansfield Park and James's The Portrait of a Lady). Questions are raised about the use of exoticism and cliches about Victorian (female) sexuality in the light of, on the one hand, postcolonial criticism by Said and others that inspired the directors and, on the other, the demands of contemporary film production within a global market.
