Numerical Testing of Timber Beam with CFRP Sheet by Comparative Body Model
Numerical analysis of timber beam strengthened by Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets is presented in this paper, together with experimental results for comparison purposes. Strengthening by CFRP is a well-known technique for improving the flexural stiffness, strength and ductility of timber structural elements. This paper presents a simple application of the numerical model developed in [1] for the geometric and material nonlinear analysis of composite beams. The essential attributes of the numerical model are: - A discretization of beam by 10 simple, two-noded, beam-column finite elements. - Usage of the Fiber Element Method for solving the material nonlinear behavior under bending moments and axial force. - Usage of the classical global iterative-incremental procedure for solving the resulting material nonlinear problem. - The analysis does not consider the sliding between wood and CFRP sheets. The numerical model is based on the incremental application of the small displacement theory. In the case of the frame structures, the influence on the geometric stiffness matrix comes from the axial force due to bending and torsion, and from the bending moments due to lateral buckling.
