Possibility of early detection of diabetes mellitus with the school age children by corelation of BMI and positive family medical history

Positive family medical history (anamnesis) is a well-known high-risk factor for developing diabetes. The research was to show the value of the medical history data in synergy with higher BMI values in early detection of diabetes, before the clinical symptoms show. 212 school children from Vuka (Osijek-Baranja County) were examined (100% coverage). All children were taken BMI, and higher levels were found with 48 examinees (22, 64%): 17 girls (35, 415) and 31 boys (64, 59%). With all interviewed overweight children were found family members (fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, brothers, sisters) who have (had) diabetes. With 17 out of 48 children (35, 41%) a positive family medical history has been confirmed. Using the pairing up method (age, sex) a control group (48 children with BMI within the recommended values) was chosen in the same school. By interviewing them positive family medical history was confirmed, as well as the illness with 6 examinees (12, 50%), which is significantly less than with the group of examinees with an increased BMI, and which is statistically significantly less than the group of examinees. The research has proven that the high- risk factors for the diabetes cases work in synergy and can be applied as simple tests of an early detection of diabetes with the school children.
