Graphical Modeling and Simulation as a Support for Developing Information Systems in Business Process Reengineering
This paper describes the basic principles and implementation phases of Business Process Reengineering (BPR), as well as a role of information systems in BPR. One of the most important instruments used in the implementation of BPR is graphical modeling of business processes, with particular emphasis on simulation modeling as a powerful quantitative decison support method for the restructuring of a company. The importance of simulation modeling in BPR is in its orientation and abilities of modeling the business processes, since processes play a crucial role in BPR. This paper describes general characteristics of graphical modeling methods and provides an analysis of their advantages toward non-graphical modeling methods. The paper also reveals important similarities of graphical methods used in simulation modeling and in information system development, and proposes a joint use of simulation modeling methods for process development in information systems in order to achieve better modeling results.
