Nuclear power plant as a potential option for sustainable development of electrical power generation in Croatia
The aim of the paper is to compare potential options for future electricity generation in Croatia having low environmental impact. From this reason nuclear plants, wind plants and natural gas plants are considered, but power plants using coal are not included in the analysis. Base for the analysis is electrical energy demand in Croatia up to the end of next decade. The sustainability of electricity generation besides low environmental impact requires economic acceptability of considered generating option and energy supply security (depending upon availability of energy source whenever is required by energy users). Due to the last requirement it is not possible to consider wind plants alone, but only when associated with a stable energy supplier. In the paper probabilistic analytical method is applied to compare economics (discounted net cash flow) and carbon dioxide emissions of combined system consisting of natural gas plants and wind plants versus nuclear power plant. Probabilistic method of analysis allows inclusion of uncertainties in future electricity generating cost prediction, particularly in respect to fuel costs changes.
