Cardiovascular risk factors in Croatian war veterans with peripheral nerve injury

Background Croatian veterans wounded during war in Croatia 1991/1992 met a great physical stress. Cardiovascular risk could be conected with it. Objective To asses and compare the prevalence of selected cardiovascular risk factor in a Croatian war veterans with peripheral nerv injury and controll group. Design Cross-sectional controlled study. PARTICIPANTS: Croatian war wounded veterans (1991/92) with peripheral nerve injury (CV) (n=91) and „ health“ controll (HC) participants (n=80). MEASUREMENTS: Potentialy cardiovascular factors as outcome measures included body mass indeks, blood pressure, leisure, smoking behavior, alcohol consumption, glucose intolerantion, physical comorbidity and physical health-related quality of life ( Coop-Wonca questionairre). RESULTS: Mean participants age don´t statistically differ between groups (CV-40, 12 years and HC-38, 85 Years, p>0.05). Between groups we found statistically differ leisure, Coop-Wonca quality of life summary score (p<0.001) and BMI (p<0.05). Level of blood pressure, smoking behaviour and alcohol consumption don´t statistically differ (p>0.05) between groups. We also found high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder-PTSD comorbidity in CV group -69 (75.8%) and in HC group 11 (13.7%), hypertension CV groups 30 (33%), HC group 12 (15%). Hyperlipidemia and glucose intolerance prevalention don´t differ between groups. Limitations Relatively high subjective bias in addiction behaviour. Conclusions CV group have increased risk for some potentialy cardiovascular risk such as hypertension, fatness, low physical activity and depression (PTSD).
