Nosema disease treatment with "Nozevit" - histology approach

Nosema disease is a microsporidian Nosema sp. parasitic disease that affects adult honeybees. The disease is spread worldwide and it causes significant losses to apiculture and economy in general. Croatian and EU legal regulations prohibit the use of antibiotics for bee diseases treatment. The justification in this is possible development of resistance to used chemotherapeutic agents, masking of diseases, relapses, as well as harmful antibiotics residua or their secondary metabolites in apian products. Therefore, use of natural phyto-pharmacological preparations in treatment of nosemosis is a necessity. Results of experimental nosema disease treatment with “ Nozevit” , show that a large number of spores was considerably reduced upon preventive (70.91%) and curative (78.37%) treatment. The mid-gut structure was histologicaly analysed in order to determine the mechanism of action of the tested preparation. For the purpose of description of neutral, acid and sulphate mucopolysaccharides we used Periodic Acid-Schiff Reaction (PAS), Alcian blue (pH = 1, 0 and 2, 5) and Toluidine blue specific staining. The results of histological examination show that the lumen of treated bees is coated with a firm layer, while untreated bees have a much looser and not clearly limited area of peritrophic membrane. Also, it has been observed that the intestinal content with numerous spores tends to be squeezed in to the centre of lumen, due to which germination of spores is probably impeded.
