Chloride threshold for different levels of reinforcement corrosion propagation
The service life of reinforced concrete structures, when they are deteriorating under chloride induced corrosion, can be divided into initiation and propagation period. The initiation period has been well researched and there are values known as chloride threshold for corrosion onset. On the other side, the propagation period is still difficult to predict with significant accuracy. The aim of the presented research was to investigate the critical chloride concentration necessary to onset different levels of corrosion propagation. Levels of corrosion propagation were determined depending on the thickness of the corroded reinforcement layer. During the research concrete elements were exposed to aggressive environment simulated in salt/humidity/temperature chamber. During the exposure corrosion parameters were measured and their values were assigned to three different levels of corrosion propagation. Chloride profiles were determined by analysis of concrete dust taken from the concrete specimens.
