Decolourization and Mineralization of Reactive Dye by UV/Fenton Advanced Oxidation Process
The photochemical degradation of chlorotriazine reactive anthraquinone dye C. I. Reactive Blue 2 (RB2) in aqueous solution has been studied using homogeneous UV/Fenton (UV/Fe2+/H2O2) process. The effects of applied H2O2, Fe2+ and RB2 concentrations at constant UV irradiation characteristics, pH and temperature were determined. All experiments were performed in a laboratory batch photo reactor. The efficiency of the investigated advanced oxidation system was assessed in the terms of environmental parameter total organic carbon (TOC) and spectrophotometric measurements (absorbance at the characteristic wavelength ; A max). Decolourization has been monitored during the 60 minutes of reaction time while TOC removal was established at the end of reaction. A pseudo-first order decolourization rate constants were obtained from the batch experimental data. It is suggested that UV/Fenton type process is a viable technique for the treatment of wastewater containing such types of reactive dyes, according to the high levels of colour and TOC removal.
