Microbial conversion in horizontal rotating tubular bioreactor
Horizontal rotating tubular bioreactor (HRTB) is designed as a combination of the biodisc reactor and the thin-layer bioreactor. The interior of HRTB is divided by O-ring shaped partition walls which together with tube wall are supposed to serve as carriers for microorganisms. The aim of this work was to investigate the HRTB performance with real biological system. For this purpose a mixed culture was cultivated in the simple glucose/yeast extract medium with C : N : P ratio 100 : 10 : 4 . During the experiment , the microbial biofilm, was formed on the bioreactor wall and the partition walls as well and the thicknesss of the biofilm was measured. The dynamics of the biological system in HRTB was by monitored with drawing the samples from five positions along the bioreactor axes and samples were analysed further for carbon source and metabolite concentration. The performance of HRTB was investigated in a wide range of process parameters (dilution rate in the range of 0.1- 1.0 h^-1 and bioreactor rotation speed in the range of 5 - 30 min^-1 ). Obtained results have shown that significant conversion efficiency could be obtained in this type of bioreactor.
