Osjetljivost bakterija animalnog podrijetla prema gentamicinu

During the last five years, in the period from 1995 to 1999 we have tested the susceptibility to aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin of 1377 animal isolates using the agar diffusion method. A wide variety of both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria was identified from samples submitted mostly from dogs and cats. Except for strains of Proteus sp. and Pseudomonas sp., most of the isolates were highly sensitive to gentamicin: 79.0% of the strains of E. coli, 57.1%-66.7% of the strains of Proteus sp. and 66.7% of the strains of K. pneumoniae were susceptible to gentamicin. Gentamicin was particularly effective against the strains of B. ovis (100.0%), Pasteurella sp. (90.0%), S. intermedius (97.3%) and S. aureus (89.1%). It has also been stated that 22.6%-40.0% of the strains of Pseudomonas sp. and 22.9% of the strains of Streptococcus sp. were resistant to gentamicin. These results indicate that gentamicin is the drug of choice in the treatment of serious infections, especially when the causative agent can not be identified or when the patient has failed to respond to other antibiotics. Gentamicin should be used when the cost of therapy can be proved by the value of the animal, or in the case of therapy of pets
