Winnie the Pooh’ s rhymes in Croatian translation and teaching practice

The English tradition of nursery rhymes is a cultural lore which is often referred to in children's literature. Milne's poetry frequently evokes rhythms of nursery rhymes. Stories about Winnie- the-Pooh include several rhymes "invented" by Pooh himself which resemble nursery rhymes not only by their rhythm, but also by their nonsensical content. In this paper the Croatian translation of some of those rhymes has been analyzed and compared to the English original with special reference to differences in rhythm, which are considered to be culturally significant. In the second step, the same rhymes have been used in a Croatian classroom, both in English and in Croatian, to investigate children's responses and their awareness of rhythm. In that way Croatian children could experience the authentic poetry in a foreign language and reflect on its translation.
