A study on energy absorption of aluminium foam

Foamed materials in general, and aluminium foams in particular, demonstrate a number of interesting properties due to their porous structure, which makes them usable in a wide range of applications. The capability of absorbing the impact energy is one of the most interesting properties of foams. This paper studies the influence of chemical composition, density and shape of aluminium foams on energy absorption. Samples of aluminium foam were produced from an ALULIGHT precursor. The ability of samples to absorb mechanical energy was estimated from the results of compression tests. Tests were carried out by a universal test machine. During tests, the sample “ force– elongation” diagram was written down. Test results showed that aluminium foams have good energy absorption and the capability of absorption decreases with the density of foam. ALULIGHT AlMgSi 0.6 TiH2 - 0.4 foam can absorb more energy than ALULIGHT AlSi 10 TiH2 – 0.8 foam.
