Distribution of dissolved and particulate carbohydrates in the northern Adriatic during summer stratification

It was shown that carbohydrates represent the prevalant organic constituents of the northern Adriatic mucilage, which typically occurs in early and mid summer. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of carbohydrates during periods of summer stratification with a special emphasis on the 1997 mucilage event. The study comprised the determination of the partitioning between dissolved and particulate carbohydrates as well as of the composition and concentration of phytoplankton using specific chemotaxonomic biomarkers. The total concentration of carbohydrates during the 1997 mucilage event exceeded the concentration typical of summer with no mucilage formation by a factor of 2. The main source of the carbohydrate formation during the mucilage event was an intensive diatom bloom in the the surface low-salinity layer. However, the distribution of dissolved carbohydrates, which represented the largest percentage of the total carbohydrates, was not well-correlated with the distribution of phytoplankton biomass.
