Coexistence of Papillary Carcinoma and Hashimoto’ s Thyroiditis

Aim was to determine the incidence of coexistence of papillary carcinoma (PC) and Hashimoto’ s thyroiditis (HT) on cytological material. Cytological data were collected from 10508 patients who performed ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the thyroid. In the total of 10508 of patients with FNAC, 2156 (20.5%) had HT and 269 (2.6%) had PC. 42 (0.4%) patients had both PC and HT. Among patients with FNAC diagnosis of HT, the prevalence of PC was 1.9% ; and among patients with PC, the prevalence of HT was 15.6%. There was no statistically significant association between the presence of PC and the presence of HT in patients underwent FNAC (p=0.0522). In a large series of patients we determined that the incidence of coexistence of PC and HT on cytological material is 0.4%. We did not find statistically significant relationship between HT and PC on cytological material.
